It is challenging to master job interview skills whatever stage of your career you are at, and most people need to work on improving their skills. However, it’s not something we learn at school or college, and so when it comes to mastering interview techniques, very few people know where to start.

The best possible way to improve your interview skills is to get a lot of practice. The more interviews you go to, the more familiar the process becomes. However, just going to meetings won’t help if you don’t learn from them.

There are several ways you can do this. One is to have a post mortem immediately after the interview or as soon as possible. It h can be helpful to have a friend do this with you. You can go over the questions and think about how you answered them and how the interviewer reacted. How did you feel about your answer? What do you think the interviewer was looking for? What might have been a better answer?

Of course, you won’t always be able to answer these questions accurately, but over time you’ll get better. Did the interviewer sit up and take notice, indicating that you were on the right track, or did he look irritated and have to ask a follow-up question?

If you have your heart set on a particular career but lack the skills, you should take the time to acquire them and go for a related job first. Choose one that you are qualified to do, but which will enable you to gain experience which will prepare you for the job you want.

Another useful preparation technique is to do mock interviews. Talk to your family and friends and see if they know anyone who does this as part of their job and who would be prepared to help you. This will make it much more realistic than merely having a friend interview you.

You can test out your new skills by applying for a few jobs you aren’t interested in. This will allow you to practice in a situation where you have nothing to lose, and you’ll eventually master your job interview skills. Remember, if you are offered the job, you don’t have to accept it!
